Polyelectrolytes in electric fields: Measuring the dynamical effective charge and effective friction

چکیده
We use a coarse-grained molecular dynamics model to study the electrophoretic behaviour of flexible polyelectrolyte chains. We first characterize the static properties of the model with respect to the chain length, the polyelectrolyte concentration, additional salt and the influence of an applied external field. Next we investigate the dynamic behaviour in the oligomer range and compare to data obtained by two different experimental methods, namely capillary electrophoresis and PFG-NMR. We find excellent agreement of experiments and simulations when hydrodynamic interactions are accounted for in the simulations. We then present novel estimators for the dynamical effective charge during free solution electrophoresis and compare them to static estimators. We find complete agreement between the static and the dynamic estimators. We further evaluate the scaling behaviour of the effective friction of the polyelectrolyte-counterion complex with the surrounding fluid. We identify a hydrodynamic screening length beyond which the friction during electrophoresis is linear depending on the chain length resulting in a constant mobility for long polyelectrolyte chains. Our results show a convincing agreement with experimental data and demonstrate that it is possible to model dynamic behaviour of polyelectrolytes using coarse

Driving knots on DNA with AC/DC electric fields: topological friction and memory effects.
The dynamical properties of entangled polyelectrolytes are investigated theoretically and computationally for a proposed novel micromanipulation setup. Specifically, we investigate the effects of DC and AC electric fields acting longitudinally on knotted DNA chains, modelled as semiflexible chains of charged beads, under mechanical tension. We consider various experimentally accessible values o...
متن کاملOn the effective charge of hydrophobic polyelectrolytes.
In this paper, we analyze the behavior of hydrophobic polyelectrolytes. It has been proposed that this system adopts a pearl necklace structure reminiscent of the Rayleigh instability of a charged droplet. Using a Poisson-Boltzmann approach, we calculate the counterion distribution around a given pearl, assuming the latter to be penetrable for the counterions. This allows us to calculate the ef...
متن کاملGauge-invariant effective fields in QCD and the strong charge screening
Gauge-invariant fields in hadrons are defined through the Wilson loop and written in terms of gauge-invariant field correlators. Dynamical equations for fields are considered. It is shown that at small distances in the leading order αs aproximation they correspond to Maxwell equations with electric current and reproduce in particular the color-Coulombic OGE potential. At larger distances nonabe...
متن کاملCounterion Condensation and Effective Charge of PAMAM Dendrimers
PAMAM dendrimers are used as a model system to investigate the effects of counterion condensation and the effective charge for spherical polyelectrolytes. Because of their amino groups, PAMAM dendrimers are weak polyelectrolytes. Lowering the pH results in an increasing protonation of the amino groups which is monitored via the proton chemical shifts of the adjacent CH2 groups. The effective ch...
متن کاملA simple model for electrical charge in globular macromolecules and linear polyelectrolytes in solution
We present a model for calculating the net and effective electrical charge of globular macromolecules and linear polyelectrolytes such as proteins and DNA, given the concentration of monovalent salt and pH in solution. The calculation is based on a numerical solution of the non-linear Poisson-Boltzmann equation using a finite element discretized continuum approach. The model simultaneously addr...
